HIP HOP IS DEAD..PT.1

THE CURRENT STATE OF HIP HOP DEPRESSES ME MORE AND MORE ALMOST DAILY...THE GOOD OLD DAYS OF GOOD MUSIC (#NOKANYE) ARE A DISTANT MEMORY. I REMEMBER YEARS AGO MUSIC WAS GOOD TO THE POINT I WAS IN THE LOCAL MIXTAPE SPOT LITERALLY DAILY TRYNA GET THE NEWEST EXCLUSIVES, WAITING FOR THE DJ'S TO COME AND DROP OFF THE NEW SHIT....NOWADAYS MOST OF THE SHIT THAT'S OUT ISN'T EVEN WORTH A DOWNLOAD, THANK GOD FOR THE LISTEN NOW/PREVIEW FEATURE. THERE ARE SOOOO FEW ARTISTS WORTH LISTENING TO I FIND MYSELF STRAYING FURTHER AND FURTHER AWAY FROM THE GENRE. I COULD NEVER SAY I WOULD LEAVE IT ALONE COMPLETELY BUT I DEFINITELY DO FIND MYSELF TAKING BREAKS FROM IT NOW A LOT MORE. I GUESS A BIG PART OF IT IS DUE TO THESE NEW ARTISTS THAT ARE BEING ALLOWED IN AND MARKETED AS THE NEXT BIG THING WHEN THEY AREN'T WORTH THE PAPER THEIR CONTRACTS ARE DRAWN UP ON. THERE ARE A LOT OF NEW ARTISTS THAT DO DESERVE A FAIR SHOT BUT ITS ABOUT WHO YOU KNOW NOT HOW GOOD YOU ACTUALLY ARE THESE DAYS. AS A RESULT WE ALL HAVE THE DUDE(S) FROM AROUND THE WAY THAT SHOULD BE ON, SHOULD BE HEARD BUT AREN'T AND IN MANY CASES NEVER WILL BE, SAD BUT TRUE. I CAN'T PUT THE BLAME ON A PARTICULAR REGION, AREA, HOWEVER YOU PREFER TO SAY IT....IT'S JUST AS A WHOLE I THINK, LACK OF CREATIVITY, ORIGINALITY AND MOST OF ALL TALENT....I GUESS BEING AS I'M A 80'S BABY AND WENT THROUGH WHAT MOST OF US CONSIDER THE GREATEST ERA OF RAP TO SEE IT WHERE ITS AT NOW IS A BIG PART OF THE DISDAIN AND DISGUST. I THINK THE DJ PLAYS A BIG PART IN IT, IF THEY DON'T PLAY IT DOESN'T GET HEARD IN GENERAL BUT THEY KEEP PLAYING IT WHILE THEY CLAIM TO HATE A LOT OF THE RECORDS BUT POLITICS AS USUAL, THEY GET THAT MONEY, THEY PLAYING THE RECORD.....ANOTHER THING IS THAT IT SEEMS ARTISTS NOW INSTEAD OF MAKING THEIR OWN LANE ARE CHOOSING TO PICK A LANE THAT OTHERS HAVE ALREADY CREATED AND JUST FOLLOW SUIT...THE MORE THAT HAPPENS, THE MORE MONOTONOUS THE MUSIC BECOMES AND THE MORE HIP HOP CRUMBLES.....REMEMBER THE OLD ROC MIXTAPES, DIPSET MIXTAPES, G-UNIT MIXTAPES (JUST A COUPLE EXAMPLES) THEY ALL HAD THEIR OWN LANES RESPECTIVELY, AND THEIR OWN SOUND....NOWADAYS ITS FOLLOW THE LEADER...THIS IS JUST THE FIRST OF MORE RANTS TO COME ON THE TOPIC

LeapNYC Charity Event

This time of year you are usually greeted with an e-mail, tweet, BBM blast or face book message that includes a “Save the date” reminder for my May (5.2) birthday celebration. March madness commences with me contemplating a perfect venue, atmosphere and theme to make my birthday celebration memorable. Previous festivities were spent amongst friends, family, co-workers and my social networker’s enjoying each other’s company, good food and music but I’ve decided to add a twist to this year’s celebration that I would like to call “A Toast for a Cause”.

The catalyst behind this fundraising celebration is my fourteen year friendship with my right hand Ebony (ICandie_Eb). Through the years Ebony and I have experienced many triumphs and failures together that has strengthened our relationship and taught us so much about ourselves. Unfortunately, in 2004 Ebony lost her younger brother Neil “Noonie” Nichols to gun violence. Neil was 20 years young at the time of his passing and like many youth in our communities’ poor decision making and negative influences led to his untimely death. The idea for “A Toast for a cause” was born in my quest to honor the memory of all of our loved ones that we lost too soon to senseless violence. I teamed up with your favorite promoter Jay Gambino of TD Group and after researching and meeting with different charities we’ve decided to work with LeapNYC. (www.LeapNyc.Org)

LeapNYC is a not-for-profit educational services organization working with 450 schools, shelters and community organizations) for its work in developing and implementing innovative programs to stimulate curiosity, foster creativity, and improve students’ academic performance from PreK through High School. In addition to their work with children, they lead professional development workshops with teachers and facilitate parent engagement activities. Their programs are customized according to each classroom and the community needs. I believe their programs have a positive impact on the community and as such have decided to raise money and awareness to help them continue the great work.
